CRYPTO DEV DIGEST: Zcash Proof-of-Stake, EOS Block Explorer, Large Donation to SLP Hackathon

TL;DR: Crypto Dev Digest (CDD) is a regular column, documenting cryptocurrency development. We highlight the projects and persons working under the hood to bring peer-to-peer, electronic cash to the world. Zcash founder floats switch to Proof-of-Stake. Bitcoin ABC 0.20.1 released. Bitcoin Unlimited’s three-point plan. SLP token support continues to gather steam, along with a donation toward an upcoming virtual hackathon. EOS Authority gets a block explorer; and many more development updates in this week’s digest.

Zcash Considers Proof-of-Stake

Proof-of-Work is considered in some circles to be problematic. They suggest it’s hardly a panacea, as it introduces reliance utterly on electricity prices which are at the whim of governments. Still others worry about 51% attacks and their relative ease. That same cadre also thunders about environmental damage and “waste” associated with Proof-of-Work mining, and all of these arguments are very much in vogue at the moment.

Proof-of-Stake and its variants of holding a certain percentage or amount of a given cryptocurrency are often go-to Proof-of-Work remedies, but have long been thought to be too experimental and risky. “Now,” Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox posted, “the situation is a little different, as proof of stake is a little more mature and shielded transactions in Zcash have come leaps and bounds! This means that we should be able to switch from proof of work to proof of stake without diverting developers too heavily away from other protocol-improving work. So I’d like to know if people generally agree, and if so, when can we do this!”

Later he wrote, under the heading of Motivation, “This is motivated by not wanting to have ‘destroying the planet’ as one of Zcash’s most prominent achievements.”
