Julie Andrews sang Robert Wise’s prescient words back in 1965 to a far-off future cryptocurrency community in an awful bear market, joyfully claiming, “When the [BEAR] bites; When the [BEAR] stings; When I’m feeling sad; I simply remember my favorite [MEMES], and then I don’t feel sooooo baaaaaaaaaad!” We know the pain you’re feeling, so sit back, scroll through, and have a good laugh at your expense. Literally.
A Few of Our Favorite Memes
You can really tell a lot about a community by way of its humor. If it has the ability to be vulnerable and make fun of itself, chances are it’s a pretty innovative and healthy place to be. It does take giant steps back in order to give your work honest appraisal, and the broader crypto space has, by and large, been keen to lampoon itself the hardest.
Laugh Now, Cry Later
The word meme was a neologism created by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. His insight was an attempt to describe human life as, and I am not doing it justice, something like a gene replicating machine. He found ideas to be roughly analogous, and termed them “memes,” which spread like a virus and wind up becoming a kind of colloquial truth.
At CoinSpice.io we have nothing personal against BitcoinSV. Seriously. Honestly. We loathe their cheering (and worse) of lawsuits, government regulation, and love of threatening physical violence against manufactured foes. But a lot of good people have embraced the project, and if it manages to bring more freedom and prosperity, fantastic. In the MEMEtime, they’ve become among our Telegram group’s favorite memetic subject.
Memes get funnier the more they’re considered. The image just above is of Tom Lee, Fundstrat’s CEO and BTC bull. His calls were legendary, and throughout 2017 he appeared to be near genius. This year, not so much. Television appearances have slowed. Tweets about crypto’s bright future have instead turned back to Wall Street analysis. Funny and sad.
