TL;DR: TRON founder Justin Sun revealed the long-awaited, much-hyped dinner he bid more than $4.5 million for, finally happened. Sun dined with the world’s most famous, and perhaps wealthiest, investor Warren Buffett as part of a charity auction fundraiser. Sun claimed he gifted Buffett his first bitcoin at the meeting.
TRON Founder Dines With Warren Buffett
The international press coverage of just winning the bid paid for itself. Legacy business and financial media picked it up, fawning over the lavish sum, $4.56 million to be exact, for a chance to chat with The Oracle of Omaha, famed American investor Warren Buffett. Sun’s profile, along with that of his cryptocurrency project TRON and arguably the ecosystem in general, was instantly lifted from curious marketer to something of an ambassador.
Buffett is the very definition of old school US-based finance. He is what’s known as a value investor, and cut his teeth on the teachings of Benjamin Graham. Buffett is also infamously hostile to technology as an investment, confessing to the maxim what he doesn’t understand he will not support financially. It has served him well, especially with regard to the dot com bubble where investors lost gazillions due to misplaced hopium.
In recent years, with the rise of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, Buffett retained his skepticism of tech and has taken a particularly pointed and bearish view of crypto. He’s openly cautioned against them entirely, finding the very idea poisonous and fraudulent. Sun’s dinner meeting, while widely panned within the crypto ecosystem as another expensive stunt, was also thought to maybe be a chance at softening Buffett’s public posture.
Buffett Gifted Bitcoin
Sun’s dinner was in danger not long ago, as he claimed to be too ill to make their first scheduled meeting. Recently, however, Sun revealed the subsequent meetup was “Amazing,” and thanked Buffett for his “support & advice on how to take #TRON to the next level! Loved our talk on #Bitcoin, @Tesla & #TRON!”
Sun also claimed to have sent Buffett crypto. The famed investor “received his first #Bitcoin! This lucky #Bitcoin is safely stored in his #Samsung Galaxy Fold. Since I gifted him this #Bitcoin, $BTC has increased 16%! Hope it continues to moon!” and Sun pointed to the supposed address as evidence. The address shows exactly 1 BTC.
The Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway hasn’t formally commented on the meeting as of publication, other than to pose for a standard photograph. Sun’s incessant tagging of Buffett’s Twitter handle is itself revealing. Buffett hasn’t made use of it since 2016, and one wonders if it was even him back then or simply an employee.
