TL;DR: More than three dozen spots around Argentina allow public transportation users to purchase rides with bitcoin, according to regional news site Cripto 247. An agreement between payment platforms Bitex and Alto Viaje makes the exchange possible for riders, adding the ability to pay in crypto via more conventional alternatives PayPal and Rapipago.
Argentina SUBE Transport Cards Can Now Be Loaded with Crypto
Sistema Único de Boleto Electrónico (SUBE) is an electronic ticketing system for public transportation in Argentina. It’s contactless, and is widely used around Buenos Aires and other cities within the country, valid on its subways, trains, and buses. SUBE is credited with speeding up public transportation without the hassle of printed receipts and long lines that come with their issuance. It’s also helped to cut down on littering and exhaust fumes as buses idle less.
Manuel Beaudroit, CMO of Bitex, explained, “We believe that this type of project is of great importance since it brings technology as disruptive as bitcoin to the common people, demonstrating the true value and the applications it has in everyday life.”
Luciano Verardo, Director of Alto Viaje, noted, “From Alto Viaje we want to offer safe and innovative services, the alliance with Bitex allows us to integrate the payment with bitcoins and new possibilities of financial inclusion for people and companies.”
The minimum payment is about $1.33, which covers two bus rides with change left over. Bitex, according to reports, launched last year, and has gained enough traction to earn the confidence of public transport processors. Argentinians are especially keen on diversifying money types, currencies, as they’ve a recent and rather horrifying experience with devaluation, bank runs, and other associated nightmares stemming from over-reliance on government fiat.
