Bitcoin Unlimited Chief Scientist Peter Rizun: Human Lightning Rod

Bitcoin Unlimited Chief Scientist Peter Rizun: Human Lightning Rod

TL;DR: Bitcoin Unlimited (BU) Chief Scientist Peter Rizun is a human lightning rod. He’s become one in recent months anyway, most notoriously due to his being asked for counter-arguments to the efficacy and need of a second layer payment solution on Bitcoin Core (BTC). The resulting drama with a BTC and Lightning Network supporter, podcaster Peter McCormack, was amazing to watch unfold, and this is Rizun’s first interview after that dust settled. Rizun also caught flack for BU’s being perceived as soft on a lawsuit aimed at open source developers. We get into all of it during this fun episode, which is available embedded in the article below, and on YouTubeiTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsStitcherRadio PublicBreakerPocketCastsPodBean, and Overcast.

Part of the charm, I guess, is McCormack’s every-man neo cockney gait punctuated with f-bombs and devil may care attitude. Heck, he even has scary stickers (tattoos). It was odd, to put it mildly, when the bearded tough guy appeared to cower and buckle under extreme pressure from BTC maxis.

If you remember, they were incensed he’d even invited, dared give a platform to, Rizun, who was widely considered an articulate counter to some commonly held Bitcoin Core assumptions, namely Lightning Network (LN). Whatever your stance on LN, I believe a lot of fence-sitters were put off by the cultish harangue of McCormack, and weirded out by his summarily dis-inviting Rizun due to such pressure.

McCormack hemmed and hawed on Crypto Twitter, lamenting his being cucked by BTC jihadists. But, that too is part of McCormack’s charisma: he puts it all out there, warts and everything, and we get to see how the sausage is made. He eventually found a spine, and re-invited Rizun, who graciously accepted. It turned out to among McCormack’s better episodes. Rizun put on a clinic, explaining his now famous five fundamental flaws of LN. Dopey BTC goofs ended up Streisand-ing the Rizun episode, as folks wanted to tune in just to hear what all the fuss was about.

CoinSpice Podcast 25 is Rizun’s first interview after the drama, and he gives some insight into how all of it happened, how he felt at the time, and what it means ultimately for free discussion in crypto (which is still very much under attack). He also gave background on his beads analogy, which a lot of people have found helpful in understanding LN and Rizun’s objections.

We also discuss the recent resignations from Bitcoin Unlimited by developers who felt that prominent community within Bitcoin Cash (BCH) was too soft on frivolous lawsuits against open source devs. Rizun gives his opinion on the matter, and suggests a solution might be in the works this month. He also lays out a quick state of BCH and how it’s progressing toward the May 15th, 2019 upgrade.
