BitMEX Confirms COO Angelina Kwan Resigned, “On Gardening Leave Now”

TL;DR: “We can confirm that Angelina Kwan is leaving the company and is on gardening leave now. That’s all we can say on the matter at the moment, but we wish Angelina all the best,” a BitMEX spokesperson told CoinSpice. The now-former BitMEX Chief Operating Officer (COO), Angelina Kwan, resigned as of 9 September 2019. The company has come under fire in recent months from regulators, and it’s unclear if Kwan’s supposed departure is in any way related.

BitMEX COO Angelina Kwan Resigns

Kwan was welcomed to BitMEX in October of last year, receiving wide acclaim and headlines. It was seen as a boon for the industry at large to have a woman in cryptocurrency at such an integral level, and it also gave the exchange some serious gravitas, heft.

Her background as a regulator, an increasingly treacherous aspect of doing business for exchanges like BitMEX to navigate, was a notable plus. Kwan previously was Managing Director for the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (HKEX), which included being Head of Regulatory Compliance. Those skills could be viewed as undeniably valuable for any crypto exchange, but especially for BitMEX.

The exchange has been mired in rumors of an ongoing CFTC investigation along with scolding from the likes of the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority recently. Those came after a notorious debate between the company’s CEO Author Hayes and economist Nouriel Roubini, where Roubini publicly stressed both Hayes and BitMEX were frauds and scammers, urging regulators to get involved.

At press time, the company’s executive team webpage has no mention of Kwan, and her LinkedIn profile no longer reflects working for the exchange. “Welcoming Angelina,” Hayes praised last year, “to the BitMEX team is a significant milestone not just for our company, but for the cryptocurrency industry as a whole. I believe Angelina’s decision to join us is a signal that the global markets are shifting focus to the rapidly-expanding domain of crypto coins.” No word yet as to Kwan’s replacement.
