ECB Eyes Digital Solutions for Online Payments

The European Central Bank (ECB) is seeking to implement new payment solutions to reduce dependence on non-European systems. Benoit Coeure, a member of the ECB, stated, “Dependence on non-European global players creates a risk that the European payments market will not be fit to support our Single Market,” expressing concerns about possible foreign disruptions. “Central bank digital currency could ensure that citizens remain able to use central bank money even if cash is eventually no longer used,” he concluded.
