TL;DR: “After 30 years in the worldwide electronic dance music scene with different projects such as Etnica, Pleiadians, Etnica in dub and P.S.O.I., producing music ranging from ambient to psy trance, we decided it was time to dedicate ourselves to one of our lifelong passions, Techno,” came the response from electronic dance music (EDM) legends Max Lanfranconi and Maurizio Begotti, better known as Etnica, when asked about their project, Tecnica. The duo have a new web-only track, “Crypto,” inspired by Bitcoin, and it features a voice-over cameo from philosopher Rick Falkvinge. CoinSpice caught up with the group for an exclusive interview.

“The main theme of this, and our next web-only releases will be Crypto,” explained Lanfranconi. “If the feedback from the web is positive we already have a few more killer tunes ready! So, if you would like to hear some more tracks, please show us your support by donating.” They’re, of course, accepting cryptocurrency:
Inspired by Bitcoin, Tecnica Releases “Crypto”
In the same way cryptocurrencies worth their salt are permissionless, borderless, and fly around the globe, that’s true for electronic dance music. The EDM phenomenon has gone from a once thought-to-be fad and musical diversion to a full-fledge subculture, complete with its own celebrities, festivals, legends — and it’s breaking into the mainstream. EDM repurposes technology to make a familiar form new all over again, a transformation crypto enthusiasts can relate to.
Max Lanfranconi and Maurizio Begotti have a long history of shaking audience butts globally, and are best known throughout Europe and Japan as the EDM group Etnica. “Under the Tecnica alias,” Begotti explained to CoinSpice from the studio by way of Telegram, “we already released a few tracks in the past but this time we decided to go in a different direction, releasing the tune with exclusivity, only on the web, and more precisely on CoinSpice as suggested by our longtime friend, Juro Kurosawa.”
Indeed, it was Kurosawa’s introduction, along with assistance from Oscar Salas, that landed a CoinSpice collaboration with the EDM masters, bringing a web-only release of the track, Crypto. If you’re new to the genre, it’s best to listen on headphones or with quality speakers. Crypto is a dense mix of sound, and to get all the subtleties and nuance requires a fidelity and respect to how it should be consumed as ear candy. Among the many Easter Eggs within the song, Crypto also contains a guest voice-over from noted ecosystem philosopher Rick Falkvinge.
Interview with Max Lanfranconi and Maurizio Begotti
CoinSpice: How can the music industry and cryptocurrencies work together?
Max Lanfranconi and Maurizio Begotti: The first thing we can see is that cryptocurrencies as a method for online payments is basically perfect because it is an effortless way to pay for a service, in this instance, music. We feel this will give artists more freedom in monetizing their music. We don’t fully know where we can go with this type of blockchain technology yet. We always get excited when we see new and exciting technologies. We see it as a revolution, similar to what we experienced in the past with electronic music and wanted to see if we can make the two things come together somehow.
What got you interested in crypto? What inspired you to make the track?
We got interested for the first time in crypto a few years ago with our friend who told us about this phenomenon. We got on the net, getting more and more information about the blockchain and how all the algorithmic stuff works.
The inspiration for the track came a few months ago after our friend came to visit us in Ibiza and we decided to create a new sound with some samples talking about the crypto phenomenon, in order to give a message to the people who don’t really know about it yet and to raise awareness of the phenomenon. This is a first experiment for us to combine this message with our music and we hope that everyone will enjoy it.
The main theme of this and our next web-only releases will be Crypto. If the feedback from the web is positive we already have a few more killer tunes ready!
