TL;DR: Happy Bill & Ted Day! Fans of the movie franchise Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989), starring George Carlin, Keanu Reeves, and Alex Winter, decided June 9th would be the day of its annual celebration. Winter went on to become a respected filmmaker, and has since directed cryptocurrency-related documentaries. After an almost three decade hiatus, he now moves back in front of the camera to reprise his role as Bill S. Preston, Esquire in the anticipated part 3, Bill & Ted Face the Music.
Happy Bill & Ted Day! Bitcoin Doc Director Stars in Part 3
Alex Winter is probably best known in the cryptocurrency community for his hard-hitting documentaries such as Deep Web: The Untold Story of Bitcoin and the Silk Road and, more recently, Trust Machine: The Story Of Blockchain. Both are foundational viewing for anyone new to the space, warm and jarring but ultimately accurate depictions of cryptocurrency’s promise and hype.
He is also, of course, a cult-classic science fiction comedy actor, made famous by his role in the Bill & Ted franchise, which not only did great box office but was spun off into a cartoon series and has become the source of endless memes and inside jokes. In the US, dates are written as month, day, and then year. And in most American high schools, early June is the month of graduation (Bill and Ted were seniors, attempting to graduate, the plot goes). The duo’s favorite number (you’ll have to watch Excellent Adventure to find out why) is 69. Combine all three, and 6/9 writes itself as the appropriate day for fans and marketers to show the film love.
To commemorate the day, Winter tweeted a storyboard from the to-be released third installment. The plot line has only been loosely rumored, but basically it amounts to a kind of prequel, where it appears the boys were supposed to write a song that unites the entire universe. And since they hadn’t, now in their early 50s, all of human life and beyond depend upon their finally getting down to business. The movie looks to be out by summer of 2020, and begins shooting within days (either tomorrow or the 17th, depending on sources). Action star Keanu Reeves, Winter’s close friend and rumored Bitcoiner, has agreed to also reprise his role as Ted ‘Theodore’ Logan.
CoinSpice caught up with Alex Winter at the Los Angeles premiere of his latest cryptocurrency-related documentary, Trust Machine (full video interview below). He explained how blockchain technology was for sure a scammy phrase, easily abused. But he also championed its possibilities as detailed in the film, and proceeded to also discuss his long history with open source hacking culture and eventual entree into Bitcoin. The project was sponsored by ConsenSys-backed media platform, Breaker.io, which purports to leverage the Ethereum blockchain to distribute content such as Trust Machine through its decentralized application (dApp).
