TL;DR: Bitcoin pioneer Jeff Garzik announced he was subpoenaed in the David Kleiman estate’s bitcoin lawsuit against Craig S. Wright. It requests more than two dozen items in support of what the estate believes is Garzik’s theory David Kleiman is Satoshi Nakamoto. At stake is billions of dollars, along with the coveted reputations of those who have put forward who they think pseudonymously founded the world’s first cryptocurrency.
Jeff Garzik Subpoenaed for Documents in Kleiman Bitcoin Lawsuit Against Craig Wright
“‘You got served,'” Garzik posted to Twitter. “The #Bitcoin lawsuit drones on. In the interest of radical transparency, here’s the subpoena that just arrived for me (sans page 1).” In 14 pages, the Kleiman estate is requesting basically everything Garzik knows, and can possibly prove, about the late man’s involvement in early development of Bitcoin.
Just a tad more than a year ago, Craig Wright was formally sued for billions of dollars by the estate of former business partner, David Kleiman (deceased). Brother Ira Kleiman claimed both men were at Bitcoin’s inception, and that one million coins were to be divided between them. The estate believes it’s owed 300,000 coins from Wright.
The estate further claims Wright made off with Kleiman’s portion fraudulently, working against Kleiman’s surviving family members’ relative ignorance. “Craig perpetrated a scheme against Dave’s estate to seize Dave’s bitcoins and his rights to certain intellectual property associated with the Bitcoin technology,” the main lawsuit asserts. “As part of this plan, Craig forged a series of contracts that purported to transfer Dave’s assets to Craig and/or companies controlled by him. Craig backdated these contracts and forged Dave’s signature on them.”
In an interview late last year, Bitcoin pioneer Jeff Garzik gave an interview where he asserts Kleiman might be the real Satoshi. That was apparently enough to setoff the estate’s legal team, and Garzik has now been roped-in as a witness. Garzik posted the court order, and it lists 28 requests, asking he indeed put forward all “documents, communications, and agreements that support your ‘personal theory’ that Dave Kleiman is Satoshi Nakamoto.” Among the requests are communications involving a bevy of crypto luminaries, projects such as Silk Road, investment trusts, and businesses Garzik might have shared his theory with in some manner.
