TL;DR: Arguably the most important journalist in history was arrested 11 April 2019, forcibly removed from asylum once granted him by Ecuador inside its United Kingdom embassy. Foil for governments all over the world, Julian Assange now faces possible extradition to the United States, surely the puppet master country pulling all the strings in a very public reminder: cross it, and with rare exception, you will be silenced.
Free Julian Assange
“Images of Ecuador’s ambassador inviting the UK’s secret police into the embassy,” American whistleblower Edward Snowden tweeted from exile in Russia, “to drag a publisher of–like it or not–award-winning journalism out of the building are going to end up in the history books. Assange’s critics may cheer, but this is a dark moment for press freedom.”
The former President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, blasted, “The greatest traitor in Ecuadorian and Latin American history, Lenin Moreno, allowed the British police to enter our embassy in London to arrest Assange. Moreno is a corrupt man, but what he has done is a crime that humanity will never forget,” he wrote of his successor overturning a deal Correa once personally oversaw.
Assange’s attorney, Jen Robinson, alerted, “Just confirmed: #Assange has been arrested not just for breach of bail conditions but also in relation to a US extradition request,” and then posted a message seemingly from Assange himself, “The US warrant was issued in December 2017 and is for conspiracy with Chelsea Manning @xychelsea in early 2010.”
As CoinSpice reported, Manning is currently serving a contempt of court jail term after refusing to testify in a grand jury hearing, presumably about Assange and WikiLeaks. For cryptocurrency advocates, Assange and Manning represent the best of our tradition. While international legal systems will play themselves out assuredly without this community’s sanction, perhaps we should not let it go unwritten, unpublished: Free Julian Assange.
