PODCAST Bitcoin ABC’s Amaury Séchet on Community Censorship, Game Theory, & Culture

TL;DR: The tension between a high signal-to-noise ratio and curating an unquestioning echo-chamber is real. The lead developer at Bitcoin ABC, Amaury Séchet, acknowledges as much but believes the pendulum inside the Bitcoin Cash (BCH) community has swung too far in the direction of noise. Bitcoin ABC’s Amaury Séchet on Community Censorship

Amaury Séchet continues an ongoing conversation with CoinSpice. This episode, we pick up on a debate between philosophy podcaster Steve Patterson and Séchet, whereby Séchet basically runs-over Patterson in a BCH chatroom. Patterson’s contentions involved attempting to find the rationale behind certain BCH client protocol decisions, with Séchet believing he’d sniffed out the fact Patterson was being less than a simple, honest inquirer.

The two went round and round, and Séchet hammered home the point Patterson was little more than a distraction, that the issues he was raising were talked about in the open for relative ages, and how the BCH community would be wise to distance itself from his likes. That led to charges of censorship, witch hunting, and hypocrisy against Séchet and his admirers.

We get Amaury Séchet on the record about the incident not to in any way disparage Patterson but to try and understand why Séchet is so adamant about culling Patterson-type voices. It’s not clear now convincing Séchet is; listeners must be the judge. But Séchet’s method might just come across as less madness than perhaps thought.

We also ask about worries of centralization and the possibility of Amaury Séchet himself becoming too powerful within the BCH community. He addresses them all and makes some very interesting points the host hadn’t considered.
