PODCAST: Bitcoin Cash Dev’s “Prepper Mentality” Makes Him Ready for Crypto’s Privacy Future

Bitcoin Cash

TL;DR: Bitcoin Cash developer Chris Troutner is a natural teacher. He’s got just the right amount of technical know-how and bedside manner to make him one of the most sought-out minds in the community. He’s also living a very alternative lifestyle as a prepper and self-sufficient member of the San Juan Islands enclave in the Pacific Northwest. We talk about how all of this makes him forward-looking enough to be concerned about the future of cryptocurrency and privacy. Bitcoin Cash Dev’s “Prepper Mentality” is an Asset

Coronavirus has really taken over most conversations of late, and they’re not always valuable. This time around, however, the chance to speak with Bitcoin Cash developer Chris Troutner just made imminent good sense to ask how he’s coping. Troutner lives on a boat as part of the San Juan Islands community of the Pacific Northwest, where he prides himself on being what’s known as a “prepper.”

Being away from polite society, from cities and the usual lifestyle configuration means becoming more self-sufficient by definition. Troutner has to prepare, prep, for any number of pending disasters and possible unforeseen circumstances. He calls it his “prepper mentality,” and it has served him well especially as the pandemic hit — the Washington state area in the US was more or less ground zero. While most were perhaps ignoring coronavirus until segments of society were being forcibly shut down, Troutner was already ahead of the game.

He saw it coming, and prepared, of course, accordingly. His take on the pandemic and how folks on the mainland are adjusting is pretty interesting. That, and he also noticed something else was going on while everyone was suddenly preoccupied with COVID-19. The United States Senate was making its move on end-to-end encryption by way of a piece of legislation called the EARN IT Act.

Privacy hawks immediately picked up on it, but so far press coverage and public outrage have been rather muted. Troutner turned to his prepper mentality and love of cryptography and Bitcoin Cash. He began toying with work from Vin Armani of CoinText, and believes he’s figured out a way to encourage greater communication privacy by leveraging the Bitcoin Cash network and its OP_RETURN advantages. It’s in the early stages of development but looks very promising.
