TL;DR: Mike in Space is considered something of an ecosystem treasure in the Bitcoin community. Bitcoin Car Talk ran infrequently for a couple of years, acting as a badly-needed comedy break from ever-increasing drama. Mike has since put the project to bed, but he’s toying with new ways of making us laugh. This episode is available embedded in the article below, and on iTunes, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Radio Public, Breaker, PocketCasts, PodBean, YouTube for Newer Episodes, YouTube Older Episodes, and Overcast.
OG Comedy Series Bitcoin Car Talk is Put to Bed
What would be the final episode of Bitcoin Car Talk was perhaps an ominous warning. It featured Bitcoin hater David Gerard. In typical fashion, creator Mike in Space lampoons himself and the crypto community, while managing to make rather profound points. In our chat, Mike confides as to why he has since moved on, and it’s a compelling answer I did not expect.
We also learn more about how he came to Bitcoin in the first place. It turns out he was brought along to express himself creatively by way of encouragement from Chris DeRose of the long-running podcast, Bitcoin Uncensored. DeRose was something of a gadfly, attracting those who wished to be less dogmatic about cryptocurrency’s implications.
Mike in Space contributed to DeRose’s show. The positive feedback led him to start Bitcoin Car Talk during the 2017 historic bull run. It’s peppered with inside jokes, and often pits tribal enemies in contrast to their online personas. Those who on social media appear humorless prove they’re not, and to great effect.
I asked him about getting guests to do wild stunts, and listeners are treated to some behind-the-scenes insights. We talked about where he is now philosophically after so many years in the Bitcoin orbit, and Mike does reveal some disillusionment, citing a CoinSpice-provided moment as a kind of wake-up call. Not to leave on too sour a note, he hints his other comedy outlet, developed after Bitcoin Car Talk, the infamous Daily Mempool Report, might soon be resurrected.
