PODCAST The Peter Ryan Report 6: From Small Project to Bitcoin Universe

TL;DR: The Peter Ryan Report is a series on the CoinSpice Podcast Network. In episode 6, Ryan examines the cryptocurrency ecosystem’s topography: developers, miners, users, merchants, exchanges, and so much more. In only a decade, a formally small project is now the Bitcoin Universe. Ryan is steeped in the space, having been a noted analyst at larger news outlets and, more recently, Executive Producer for a new documentary on Amazon Prime, Rizqi Presents: Blockchain, a six part series, exploring crypto in-depth. He’s also head of Ryan Research. The Peter Ryan Report 6: Mapping the Bitcoin Universe

Every so often, it’s a good exercise to step back and appreciate how large and varied the cryptocurrency ecosystem has become. It’s a real life, present time example of the insightful essay I, Pencil by Leonard Read. Innumerable elements and pockets of people around the world are working to create whatever the industry is and will become — folks we’re never going to meet, and yet they are our great benefactors.

One of the most unanticipated, heavily weighted influences on the Bitcoin Universe today is speculative exchanges. From well-known companies such as Coinbase, Binance, and Kraken, to more obscure market makers in seemingly darker parts of the web, exchanges are make or break for most projects. Get in their favor, and all is well; fall out, and all might be lost. Ryan muses on the power they yield in the light of awarding tickers and delistings, along with wondering at the eventual impact of decentralized exchanges.

Ryan believes the next boom phase of the ecosystem will be payment processing, long ignored and taken for granted. Regardless of their overall philosophy, people seem to want to use cryptocurrency. They want to try it with live ammunition, to pay for everyday goods and services, and payment processors allow that fluidity and even a potential escape back into fiat should the speculative market turn.
