Pro-Bitcoin Lawmaker to Challenge Trump for President of the United States

TL;DR: “Let’s do this,” came a tweet on April 28, 2020, by US congressman Justin Amash, announcing his exploration for a Presidential run to challenge Donald Trump. Amash is a self-identified libertarian-leaning politician and has a long history of supporting Bitcoin.

“Today, I launched an exploratory committee to seek the @LPNational’s nomination for president of the United States,” Amash continued. “Americans are ready for practical approaches based in humility and trust of the people.” The 40-year-old lawmaker, representing Michigan, has been in Congress for the last decade, mostly as a Republican — the party of Trump.

Harkening back to his relatively recent formal break with his former party affiliation, Amash insisted, “We’re ready for a presidency that will restore respect for our Constitution and bring people together. I’m excited and honored to be taking these first steps toward serving Americans of every background as president.” He was one of the few Republican members to openly criticize President Trump and party leadership, declaring himself an Independent July 4, 2019. He would be the first Palestinian-American candidate for US President.

As the only Independent in the 435 member chamber, Amash’s break last year was hardly unexpected, considering his heterodox views. Bitcoin is a great example, as he sarcastically lampooned the Obama administration’s paranoia (see above). Along with being early to recognize cryptocurrency’s challenge to fiat, Amash has also been counted on as a Ron Paul-like critic of central banking. “Why should one man control the value of money? What does God need with a starship? Equally perplexing questions,” Amash posted provocatively in 2012.

At this stage, it’s hard to give Amash much of a chance in derailing either Trump or the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee, Joe Biden. And, an exploratory committee is not an official launch for President. It’s instead a way to see if enough enthusiasm exists, especially financially, to eventually mount a credible run. Much of that will be decided with Amash’s appeal to younger voters, seemingly a natural constituency. With Bernie backing the Democratic Party establishment, Trump’s approval ratings lowering, it could be a way for Amash to at least be a spoiler while raising the visibility of America’s lone viable political party alternative, the Libertarian Party.
