Season 2 of Milk keeps rocking, and three episodes in listeners meet the mind of science fiction legend, Dr. David Brin. Astrophysicist, pundit, world renowned author, and philosopher, Brin is a pretty amazing interview. He tackles the crypto space and issues of state surveillance in an entirely different manner, as I hope you’ll hear.
David Brin is a Contrarian
Just when you think you have Brin figured out, boom, he lays something on you in a way you might not have previously considered. He’s all for giving money to US non-governmental organizations such as the EFF and ACLU, even though some of what they agitate for he believes amounts to a kind of paternalism.
It’s the same with his fiction, really, and part of what makes it great. He doesn’t leave the reader in impossible, fantastical worlds, but rather ones that’re interesting and brilliant … yet the protagonist can and will find a way to overcome in seemingly realistic ways.
He’s the guy in almost every room who is diligently finding holes in dominant arguments. He has his opinions, and some of them border on conventional, but he’s also careful to be generous with allowing others to make their own way.
Brin was quick to figure crypto is filled with libertarian-leaning enthusiasts, and he openly challenges our assumptions about government, bureaucrats, and oligarchs. I wasn’t ultimately convinced, but I appreciate his point of view and willingness to engage. It was also super interesting to learn how he fits ICOs and blockchain into his transparent society vision of the world.
