TL;DR: At last year’s Deconomy gathering, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin confronted Craig Wright of nChain, calling him a fraud. It was also the scene where Blockstream’s Samson Mow and Bitcoin.com CEO Roger Ver had choice words. This year’s event looks no less spark-filled, as crypto’s brightest stars and biggest villains take the world stage in South Korea. Organizer Jeff Paik gives listeners the lowdown on all the potential showdowns. Deconomy 2019 Organizer Jeff Paik’s Lowdown on the Showdown
Jeff Paik is co-founder and organizer of Deconomy, a crypto conference heading into its second year. Around this time in 2018, the gathering snatched headlines all over the world. It was a stellar lineup of A-list speakers, leaving behind the typical initial coin offering pitches, which meant attendees were treated to some of the brightest minds the industry had to offer. Every aspect was represented: websites, news outlets, philosophers, authors, enterprise consortiums, and thought leaders.
Paik was at the center of 2018’s main kerfuffle. He brought together, for what would be the last time publically, Samson Mow of Blockstream and Roger Ver of Bitcoin.com. The big debate that year was bitcoin core (BTC) versus bitcoin cash (BCH). The two men squared off, and memes for a lifetime were made.
At one point, Paik threw to the audience, opening a question and answer session. None other than Vitalik Buterin rose, and proceeded to lambast a fellow speaker, Craig Wright — neither Buterin nor Wright were on the stage. Buterin called Wright a fraud and complained about his being given a speaking platform. Up until that point, Buterin was not thought to be a verbal bomb-thrower nor confrontational. Wright was essentially intellectually bitch-slapped by Buterin, and the cryptosphere erupted. This year, Badass Buterin returns to the ring. He’s facing Dr. Doom, economist Nouriel Roubini.
Roubini has had something of a second career as a crypto skeptic. He pulls no punches, and even testified before legislatures about what he perceives as crypto’s dangers. Has Vitalik “Fraud Smasher” Buterin met his match? Paik is lending a special offer to CoinSpicers who want to find out in person: sign up for Deconomy, pay in bitcoin cash (BCH), use the code COINSPICE, and you’ll earn 50% off the ticket price. Hurry! The conference is in South Korea again this year, and is scheduled for April 4-5, featuring Andreas Antonopoulos, Vitalik Buterin, Nouriel Roubini, Philip Zimmermann, Joseph Lubin, Changpeng Zhao, and more.
